6th April 2010

Bad news when we awoke today. No wind, just a light breeze. No good for kitesurfing. The guys at the kitesurfing school were hoping it would pick up after 12 so we went and sat on the beach for a couple of hours, watching the world go by.

By the way, the ladies on the beach are covered up (and must be so hot!) because they don’t want to catch the sun. The Vietnamese believe it’s more beautiful to be white, so all through Vietnam we have seen women wearing long sleeves, gloves and socks.

However, by the afternoon there was no improvement and we knew we weren’t going to be doing anything today. You could tell just by the lack of kitesurfers and windsurfers in the water. The beach was relatively deserted.

We went back to Windchimes and sat for a couple of hours with the owner Trang. A really interesting chap, he was born in Vietnam, lived here through the war, then in his teens he was a boat person in a refugee camp in Thailand before emigrating to America where he lived for 35 years. Eventually after a major kitesurfing accident in the states he returned to Mui Ne and set up his windsurfing and kitesurfing school.

It certainly isn’t a bad spot to be stuck for a few days. The wind is supposed to improve on Thursday and Friday and we’re not ready to give up yet so stay we must. Shame!

It’s a tough life!

The rest of the day was spend reading and catching up on blogs before a wonderful meal out at the Moon Cafe. Unfortunately the money we saved eating local was blown on a coffee and a cocktail at one of Mui Ne’s poshest resorts, the Sailing Club. These 2 drinks cost almost as much as tonight’s meal, but it was such a fabulous seting with low, squishy chairs, subdued lighting and the sound of the waves crashing gently on the shore. Paradise indeed.
